Communicators share similar traits to open minded people, in that they need to be able to assess situations for what they actually are. Communicators need to be open minded so that they can holistically view on situations. This allows a lack of bias and enables them to effectively communicate with other parties. Communication also requires a level head because of you escalate a situation you are now a part of the issue.
One time that I have shown communication skills in the real world comes from about a year ago. As I waited on the bus stop with brother I was looking at my phone. Out of the corner of my ear I heard a man say, “Somebody do something about that”. I quickly looked up, and across the street I see two old men fighting. One of them was much larger than the other, both in height and stature. I saw him hit the much smaller man and knock him over. I rushed across the street to intervene and immediately noticed that they were both clearly drunk. I broke up the fight by putting my body in the way, and asked them what the problem was. Apparently the smaller old man had stolen a can of beer from the other much larger man. He told me a short story about how when he was younger, people would be killed for doing things like that. He came from a really low neighborhood in Chicago. I talked to them for a bit and explained that catching an offense is not as serious as a can of beer. I even got the larger man to say sorry. As they parted I followed the smaller man to make sure he got away safely.
In times like these it’s important to stay calm. I honestly felt threatened by the larger man because I thought that he was planning on fighting me. Luckily however, it didn’t happen. I showed myself as a communicator by listening to their arguments And assessing their needs. I believe a really important piece of resolving this issue was following through to make sure they split up and didn’t restart the problem. As I followed the smaller man, I learned that he had gotten his glasses knocked off too. Unfortunately they had already been run over by a car, but the man was grateful for my help.
